I got laid off last week. Specifically, this is how last week went:
- Monday: See John Hodgman and Friends at Town Hall.
- Tuesday: Get laid off. Tell a bunch of friends via text while waiting for the bus. Go to the bar. Reap free drinks.
- Wednesday: Apply for a job, referred by a friend. See Amanda Palmer and Neil Gaiman at The Moore. Tell more friends. Reap more free drinks.
- Thursday: Apply for unemployment. Return separation paperwork.
- Friday: Apply for more jobs. Attend the birthday party of a nice dude I’m seeing.
- Saturday: Spend the afternoon and evening with friends, reaping more free drinks and food. Friend A relates the John Hodgman experience to Out-of-Towner Friend B. I attempt to correct her: that couldn’t possibly have been on Monday. BUT IT WAS. Become instantly exhausted and go to bed at 9pm.
Since then, it’s been a lot of meals with friends, paperwork, keeping my apartment extremely tidy, watching movies, some interviews, knitting, and generally feeling a bit off, but surprisingly relaxed. I’m giving myself some time before I really ramp things up, seeing as Thanksgiving is coming up and most places won’t be urgently hiring before then. The world seems to have wanted to give me a break, so I’m taking it: I’ve never been unemployed, not since I was getting paid cash under the table at my family’s park before I could legally work at 15.
That said, I’ll be updating my portfolio with some swell UI designs in the next few days. Hint hint.
